Translation of the Elements of theology of Proclus

The researchers of cluster 3 adopt a historical perspective, attentive to the continuities that bond the ancient, medieval and early modern worlds.
Two principles structure this research group :
- the focus on the strong articulation between philosophy and theology in the perspective of a history of religions giving a full place to scholar religion ;
- the consideration of the very long period from Greek Antiquity to Byzantium and to the modern Western age.
Moreover, the researchers here share common care and attention of texts studies, from their edition to their interpretation, and bases the analysis of doctrines on a rigorous philological basis.

PRIVILEGED PERIODS

- Greco-Roman Antiquity, especially the imperial and late periods ;
- The Latin Middle Ages ;
- The Renaissance and the modern period, up to the 17th century.

UNIFYING THEMES

- Philosophical and religious rationalities and their limits.
- History of exegesis, dogmas, philosophical and theological doctrines.
- Transformations of the (neo-)platonic tradition and its legacy.
- Philosophy of nature and theories of knowledge (logic, notics).

In the core of the research is the idea that philosophy crossed under religions, theologies or metaphysics. A keen interest is taken in scholar theology as a dogmatic construction, as a basis for interreligious dialogue or as a space for controversy : through debates, the mutual influences, as well as the interactivity of these religious traditions and their philosophical interpretations will be studied.
