Member of LEM’s cluster 1 : "Sacred books : canons and heterodoxies", Professor at the École pratique des hautes études, Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi is a specialist of the exegesis and the theology of Shia Islam. At the EPHE, he is the chairman of classical Islamic studies ; his last predecessors were Louis Massignon, Henry Corbin and Daniel Gimaret. His chair, entitled “Exegesis and theology of Shia Islam” is the only one dedicated to Shia Islam in the Western academic world.

Fields of research

 Political violence, canonical scriptures and doctrinal evolutions in Islam.
 Canonical scriptures of Islam.
 Shia esotericism ; its roots and developments.
  Persian mystical poetry.
 The history of the redaction of the Quran.
  Historical and philological examination of the shi’I sources of the three or four first centuries of Hejira.

Projects

 A monographic book about Ali b. Abi Talib.
 Research on the creation, the development and the historical and ideological evolutions of Shia Islam, particularly in relation to certain spiritual and intellectual traditions of the late Antiquity (such as Manicheanism or gnostic Christian branches).

Awards and honorary distinctions

  1st Prize of the Mahvi Foundation (Geneva) for the best PhD dissertation in Islamic studies (1992).
  Lequeux Award of the Institute of France for the direction of the publication Dictionnaire du Coran (2008).
 Award for the best book on Islamic studies of 2011 for The Silent Quran and the Speaking Quran of the Persian Heritage Foundation (New York).
 Award for the best researcher in human sciences of the Fondazione Carical, Cosenza (Italy, October 2016).
 Chevalier of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques (2002), Officier of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques (2015).
 Member of the Académie Ambrosienne (Milan, 2016).
