Member of Research group 1 "Sacred books: canons and heterodoxies", Mathieu Terrier is Researcher with the CNRS in Paris at the Laboratoire d’études sur les monothéismes (LEM/UMR 8584). He specializes in the history of ideas in Islam. He also teaches at the University of Paris Nanterre a master’s degree of philosophy, and is the co-supervisor of a seminar at the IISMM/EHESS.
His research is mostly focusing on the works of “lives and doctrines of the sages” in the Arabic and Muslim world, the evolution of theological and philosophical ideas in shi’ism, from the origin to the early modern period, and the creation of a “philosophy of Shi’ism” between the 14th and the 17th centuries..

– The history of re-readings of ancient philosophy in Islam (9th-17th centuries).
– The philosophy or gnosis of Imami Shi’ism (14th-17th centuries): its creation, its sources, its innovations.
– Historiography and historiosophy of Imami Shi’ism.
– The uses and interpretations of the Qur’an and the Hadith in the philosophy of Imami Shi’ism.
Current projects
– The history of the notion of wisdom in Islam through the study of works on the "Lives and doctrines of great sages".
– The preparation of a bilingual anthology of philosophy in Islam with Fârès Gillon (Aix-Marseille University).
– The Shi’i biography of the prophet Muhammad.
– Translation and commentary of the Epistle of the Resolution of the Dispute (Raf‘ al-khilâf wa-l-munâza‘a) by Sayyid Ḥaydar Âmulî: a Shi’i understanding of the succession of the prophet Muhammad.
– The revival of Shi’i Qur’anic exegesis from the 8th/14th century.
– The figure of the Perfect Man at the crossroads of Shi’ism, Sufism and Islamic philosophy.
