Member of Research group 1 "Sacred books : canons and heterodoxies", Mathieu Terrier is Researcher with the CNRS in Paris at the Laboratoire d’études sur les monothéismes (LEM/UMR 8584). He specializes in the history of ideas in Islam. He also teaches at the University of Paris Nanterre a master’s degree of philosophy, and is the co-supervisor of a seminar at the IISMM/EHESS.
His research is mostly focusing on the works of “lives and doctrines of the sages” in the Arabic and Muslim world, the evolution of theological and philosophical ideas in shi’ism, from the origin to the early modern period, and the creation of a “philosophy of Shi’ism” between the 14th and the 17th centuries..

Fields of research

- The history of re-readings of ancient philosophy in Islam (9th-17th centuries).
- The philosophy or gnosis of Imami Shi’ism (14th-17th centuries) : its creation, its sources, its innovations.
- Historiography and historiosophy of Imami Shi’ism. 
- The uses and interpretations of the Qur’an and the Hadith in the philosophy of Imami Shi’ism.

Current projects

- The history of the notion of wisdom in Islam, through the study of the works on the “lives and doctrines of renowned sages”.
- The problem of Evil in the philosophies and the theologies of Islam : editions, with Patrizia Spallino, of the proceedings of the colloquium organized by the Officina di Studi Medievali de Palerme in October 2016.
- The relations between Shi’ism and Sufism while the premodern and early modern period (14th-17th centuries) : edition, with Denis Hermann, of the proceedings of two study days organized in Edinburgh in 2014 and Venice in 2015.
- Edition and translation of the Letter on the imaginal world of Quṭb al-Din Ashkevari (end of the 17th century).
- Preparation of a bilingual anthology of Arabic and Muslim philosophy, and collaboration in writing a handbook on Hadith (with the support of the GIS Moyen-Orient-Mondes Musulmans and the Foundation of Islam of France).
- The participation to the GDRI “Nouveaux horizons pour l’histoire intellectuelle et sociale du chiisme à l’époque pré-moderne et moderne”, directed by Denis Hermann (CNRS, UMR 7528, Iranian and Indian Worlds).
